Recommended Bets:
Under 2.5 goals @ 6/5
Sunderland – Draw No Bet @ 13/2

Sunderland were the only team to be unbeaten in the Premier League against Man City last season, taking a total of four points from the eventual champions. While the Black Cats and Citizens are two of only three unbeaten sides in the Premier League this campaign. Will something give? Or can Martin O’Neill’s side earn another draw at the Etihad?

City won 18 of their 19 Premier League home games last season; with the only blemish on that record being a 3-3 draw against Sunderland. Sunderland had led 3-1 until the 85th minute, but late strikes from Mario Balotelli and Aleksandr Kolarov would deny the Wearsiders a famous double. Ji Dong-Won’s late strike at the Stadium of Light four months earlier giving them the three points on home soil.

In fact, Sunderland do have a remarkably good record against Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City. In the five games that the two clubs have played since the Italian took the job at the Etihad Stadium, City have won only once while Sunderland have won twice and earned two draws. This may not be as comfortable a fixture for the champions as the 2/7 odds suggest, while 9/1 on an away win does look slightly on the large side.

The visitors will, however, be without captain Lee Cattermole who continues to serve a suspension following his red card in the Capital One Cup game against MK Dons. Phil Bardsley and Wes Brown are both definitely out with respective ankle injuries while Carlos Cuellar is a doubt having missed last week’s win over Wigan due to a hamstring problem.

City’s Micah Richards continues to be unavailable having only recently returned to training following a long-term injury, Maicon is a doubt having missed the last four games with a foot injury and Javi Garcia is also a concern after he was substituted in the midweek draw with Borussia Dortmund due to a thigh problem.

Mancini’s main dilemma will be which of his strikers will start the game. City have not played the same two forward players in consecutive games this season, although it is in fact defensively where they have had most problems, failing to keep a clean sheet in 11 games in all competitions.

O’Neill, on the other hand, will have no such quandaries in selecting his forward line. Steven Fletcher has scored all five of Sunderland’s league goals this season, netting in every Premier League game since joining the club. The Scot is priced at odds of 7/2 to continue that run this weekend.

Despite City’s poor defensive record this looks like a game that could be settled by the odd goal. Sunderland don’t score many under O’Neill, but neither do they concede many and at the odds 6/5 on Under 2.5 goals looks to be the best bet of the game.

For the Match Odds market Sunderland do look the value bet at odds of 9/1, but given that they would be more than happy with a draw it makes sense to take the 13/2 in the Draw No Bet market instead.
